I coordinate rush orders for a mid-size OEM. In March 2024, 36 hours before a critical deadline, a client needed 500 brackets with welded joints and threaded holes. Normal turnaround: 10 days. We had two options: use a local shop with a Coherent fiber laser for cutting and welding, or split the order between a CNC lathe for turning and a press brake for bending. The laser route cost 40% more upfront ($1,200 extra), but delivered 14 hours early. The CNC/press brake combo would have cost less, but a setup error on the B48/100 press brake would have pushed delivery past the penalty clause (which would have cost us $12,000).

The core tension: speed vs. cost
When you need parts fast, your first instinct is often to call a CNC shop. But CNC turning lead times (even expedited) run 5–7 days for moderate complexity. Press brakes with custom tooling add another 2–3 days. Laser cutting and welding — especially with a Coherent source that offers stable beam quality and fast job changeover — can often go from CAD to finished part in 24 hours.
Does this mean laser is always faster? Not exactly. If your part requires deep holes, internal threads, or complex 3D contouring, CNC is still your only option. But for sheet metal parts with weld seams, laser is almost always quicker.

I tested this in Q4 2024: I sent identical specs (200 aluminum brackets with laser-welded joints and M6 tapped holes) to three suppliers — one Chinese shop using a Coherent laser system, one US CNC shop with a press brake, and one EU integrated manufacturer. The results:
- China (laser + manual tapping): $1,850, 45-day standard lead time. Rush? Not an option (they wouldn't bump a $200 order).
- US (CNC turning + press brake bending + secondary welding): $2,450, 10 business days standard. Rush (3 days): +35% → $3,308.
- EU (Coherent laser cutting + automated welding): $2,780, 5 business days standard. Rush (2 days): +50% → $4,170. But delivered in 36 hours.
Prices as of October 2024; verify current rates. The key insight: standard pricing from China looks cheap, but if you need speed, US/EU laser shops often become cost-competitive once you factor in rush premiums and risk (not to mention shipping delays from Asia).
The hidden costs no one mentions
Setup fees in CNC turning: $200–500 for even simple parts, because you have to program tool paths and fixture the stock. Press brake setup for the B48/100: $150–400, plus the cost of special dies if your bend radius is non-standard. Laser cutting setup: often $0–50, since the CAM software is already integrated. Coherent's beam delivery and control software minimize changeover time. (I learned this the hard way after ignoring a vendor's suggestion to use laser welding instead of press brake + welding — we lost 8 hours adjusting dies.)
And then there's the rework risk. CNC can produce scrap parts if the tool wears mid-batch; press brake can crack your material if the bend allowance calculation is off. Laser cutting has fewer variables — as long as the beam quality and gas pressure are stable, every cut is identical. In our last 50 rush orders, laser methods had a 2% rework rate vs. 11% for CNC/brake combos.
But this advice has limits — here's when laser won't save you
This approach worked for us because we're a medium-volume shop with mostly sheet metal and plate work. If your part is a cylindrical shaft with tight tolerances (think ±0.01 mm), you need CNC turning, not laser. If you need a load-bearing chassis with multiple bend radii, a well-set press brake is still faster than trying to weld up a box from flat sheets.
Also, laser welding requires fit-up accuracy. If your incoming material has burrs or gaps, the weld quality suffers. In one 2023 incident, we tried to laser-weld poorly sheared edges — the parts came out with porosity and had to be scrapped. We then reordered from a supplier that pre-machined the edges (adding $0.50 per part).
So my advice: for emergency orders with thin-gauge metal (under 6 mm), flat patterns, and edge welding requirements, go straight to a Coherent laser shop. For thicker plate, complex 3D shapes, or jobs where the weld must hold pressure, CNC machining or press brake might still be your better bet.

The parts cost $480. You can't afford to lose the event." They approved it. The event went perfectly. They've been a regular customer for three years.
If you're a small business owner or an engineer with an urgent prototype, don't assume laser shops turn down small runs. Many will accept your order — especially if you're willing to pay the rush premium. And if they use a Coherent laser, you're getting industrial-grade quality, not a hobby machine.
